The challenge

Mission-critical connectivity outside the public network

A private LTE is a local cellular network that includes cell sites and core network servers dedicated to supporting the connectivity of a specific organisation’s requirements, independent of the cellular networks of service providers. Institutions, factories, university campuses, hospitals and mining facilities are examples where Private LTE Networks can play a significant role to bring new value to communications.

Essentially, a user is connected to his carrier in daily life, and when he enters his company’s facilities — say a factory — his device is switched into the company’s mobile network. All communications then happen on that network until he leaves the facility, at which point he reconnects to his personal subscription. The main benefit is that organisations can handle mission-critical communications with an effective SLA, avoiding the congested public networks.

One of the main hurdles is finding a suitable core network adapted to the business model Private LTE requires — relatively small subscriber counts, irregular traffic patterns — and an SDM capable of handling the advanced multi-IMSI and multi-SIM scenarios that effectively make this an advanced roaming use case.
