What Is Open Gateway?

Open Gateway is a global initiative led by the GSMA to transform traditional telecommunications networks into open, developer-ready platforms. It achieves this through a unified framework of standardized APIs that give businesses, developers, and service providers secure, interoperable access to advanced network capabilities — regardless of operator or country.

The concept is built on the CAMARA project, an open-source collaboration between the Linux Foundation, TM Forum, and the GSMA. CAMARA defines the technical standards that ensure these APIs work consistently across the telecom industry.

The main goal is to simplify and speed up the creation of new digital services. Previously, integrating with each operator required custom technical work. Now, with a single standardized API, applications can be deployed globally, reducing both time and cost. This opens the door to innovation in industries such as fintech, gaming, IoT, logistics, and transportation.

Real-world use cases include fraud prevention (verifying whether a transaction originates from the correct device and location), quality-of-service prioritization for critical applications in high-demand environments, and route optimization for autonomous vehicles and drones based on available network coverage.

Since its launch at MWC 2023, Open Gateway has gained the support of more than 69 operators in 28 markets, covering over 75% of the world’s mobile connections. Companies such as Telefónica, Vodafone, Orange, AT&T, and China Mobile are already part of the ecosystem — and the network continues to expand.

Open Gateway marks a turning point for the telecom industry, shifting networks from closed infrastructures to open, programmable platforms. As more operators adopt standardized APIs, innovation will accelerate, creating new opportunities for businesses and developers worldwide.
