Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP): From Technology to Scalable Adoption
eSIM and Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) technologies are no longer futuristic concepts — they are real, growing, and transforming how connectivity is managed across consumer devices, vehicles, and IoT deployments. But despite the progress, true large-scale adoption is still in its early stages. What’s holding it back? And what needs to change?
According to GSMA Intelligence, by 2030, over 6.9 billion smartphones will be eSIM-enabled — and eSIM will power more than 40% of cellular IoT connections globally. That growth signals a clear shift: flexibility, automation and remote management are becoming non-negotiable. Yet many players are still struggling with the transition from traditional SIM models to scalable RSP deployments.
What’s slowing things down?
While the benefits of RSP are widely accepted — simplified logistics, faster onboarding, better lifecycle management — several challenges are still preventing full adoption, especially in the IoT space. These include:
- High cost of implementation
- Integration difficulties with legacy systems
- Fragmented standards and testing requirements
- Limited supplier options
- Lack of expertise and interoperability
- Manual provisioning processes still in use
One surprising insight from the GSMA report is how many mobile operators still treat eSIM like traditional SIMs, relying on pre-ordered volumes and physical distribution — even when the technology enables full digital workflows.
The way forward: end-to-end digitisation
To unlock the full potential of eSIM and integrated eSIM, the industry must move towards a fully digital, end-to-end process — from profile ordering to provisioning, activation, and updates.
New developments, such as the SGP.32 specification and the eSIM IoT Remote Manager (eIM), will play a critical role in enabling secure remote management at scale. Meanwhile, features like in-factory profile provisioning (IFPP) will help streamline manufacturing and distribution, especially for battery-constrained or hard-to-access IoT devices.
Beyond eSIM: building the flexible foundation for digital transformation
The message is clear: RSP isn’t just about the SIM — it’s about how networks evolve. For telcos and enterprises, success will depend on the ability to modernise legacy systems, adopt digital workflows, and ensure automation across connectivity management. This shift is already underway — but unlocking its full potential requires a coordinated effort across the value chain.
Remote SIM provisioning is no longer a promise — it’s an urgent opportunity.
Let’s turn available technology into scalable reality.
